A highly lustrous dark black or dark grey chert. Can have striping. Calcite crystal inclusions are often visible under strong light or with a hand lens. Pitkin sometimes has small fossil inclusions but those are not easily visible in dark colored chert.

Wide range of colors including white, blue, green, gray, and dark gray almost black.  Reed’s Spring is often shows mottling or banding.  Jack Ray has documented 9 types.  Don Dickson has described over 20 Reed’s Spring variations.
