The lithic sourcing site is intended to assist archeologists and interested archeology para-professionals in the origin identification of archeologically significant toolstone.  Toolstones include a variety of flints, cherts, salicified woods, quartz and quartzites, and corals.  Obsidian isn’t covered here but extensive obsidian studies can be accessed through Northwest Research Obsidian Studies Laboratory.  Experts are invited to contribute photographs, suggestions, and mild criticism.

This site should be considered a work in progress and will become more useful as more precise information and detailed photographs become available.

MAPS:  The maps will be refined as additional source location information is receive.  Exact locations of prehistoric quarry locations will not be published on this website.

PHOTOS:  Copyright free digital photos of toolstone varieties, especially magnified or microscopic, and additional information on sources would be welcomed.

ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE REFERENCES:  The sites listed are intended to represent the range of regions where the tool stone has been identified from archeological sites.  The list can’t possibly be extensive but is intended to offer an idea of the direction and extent that a chert might travel from the source location.
